The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (the MHRA) have confirmed that they are investigating reports that suggest that the slimming pill Reductil could be linked to an increased risk of heart problems.
The European Medicines Agency said in December that they were looking into a clinical trial into the slimming pill which seemed to show that the active ingredient in the pills, sibutramine, could put people at increased risk of developing heart disease.
Since the pill was introduced in 2008, over 300,000 prescriptions have been written for it by GPs around the country. The regulators who set clinical guidelines for the NHS, NICE, have approved it as safe and effective in helping dangerously overweight people shed the pounds and it is widely used across the NHS.
It is one of only two diet pills that are licensed for use in the UK, the other being Xenical, a fat-busting drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, though there are a number of new drugs (such as tesofensine and contrave) which are currently undergoing clinical trials. . Xenical works to block the action of a fat-digesting enzyme in the gut to dietary fat is not broken down and instead passes out of the body.
Reductil is an appetite suppressant that works by blocking the action of nerve cells that release and then reabsorb serotonin. The hormone serotonin is a chemical neurotransmitter that affects mood and appetite, so as the body’s serotonin levels rise, patients feel fuller and want to eat less.
It is not recommended for use by patients with heart problems, as it is known to slightly raise blood pressure. NICE advise doctors to use the drug with caution and to monitor patient’s heart rate and blood pressure.
The study which has raised concerns is called the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcome Trial (SCOUT, for which the research team recruited participants who are overweight or obese and already had heart problems. Over 6 years, an international trial involving 10,000 patients was carried out, though the results by no means prove conclusively that Reductil is dangerous, as the heart problems experienced by the participants would have automatically excluded them from being prescribed the drug.
Nonetheless, the European Medicines Agency said that the ‘seriousness’ of the study had meant they were looking into its implications on the prescription of the slimming pills. They plan to release their findings later this month.
If the drug is banned, it will leave many obese patients without any recourse to medical help. Though there are a number of new slimming pills in the pipeline, such as tesofensine, it will be some time before they are approved and reach the market.
Abbott Laboratories, who manufacture Reductil, said in a statement, “Our ongoing evaluation of the SCOUT study data does not change our medical assessment of sibutramine’s risk/benefit profile when used appropriately in the approved patient population.
“Sibutramine is an important treatment for patients who are obese”.

Taking care of our planet is the responsibility of everyone. Using eco yoga mats when you are out for breathing exercises or buying special gifts of ethical jewelry for family and friends means you care. Everyone knows the planet is in trouble but not everyone is prepared to do something about it. It is always easier to talk than act but if we want our children to enjoy the fresh air of the countryside and the wilderness of the woods and meadows we have to do some acting.
To reverse the current situation all people around the globe need to do their share of good work towards a healthier and greener environment. You can start by donating to green organizations and joining campaigning of different environmental causes. But you can make an impact if you recycle stuff, sort your garbage before disposing of it, support organic farmers, buy fair trade products and so on. Switch to a bike or your two feet whenever you can and try to be as environmentally friendly as possible in your home. Get double glazed windows and insulate your walls well to save on energy bills. Don’t have too many appliances running at the same time and conserve your water. If everyone works, we’ll live in a cleaner world.

Thermogenic foods burn more energy when digesting than any other food. Such foods increase the rate that the body burns stored fat to release energy. As the calories are burnt, more energy is available for physical activities, thus burning even more calories.
Thermogenic foods include guarana, ginger, cayenne pepper, salsa, mustard, grapefruit and to drink, ice cold water. However, it is important to pay attention to the bigger picture so that you are not at risk of falling for the latest fad diet and becoming inefficient at eating a balanced thermogenic diet.
In reality, all foods are thermogenic as the body must use energy to digest them. This is known as the ‘thermic effect of food’. Nevertheless, not all foods have the same thermic effect. The most thermogenic foods are lean proteins such as chicken or turkey breast and almost all types of fish or even egg whites.
Protein drinks also have a high thermic effect and can be very useful in boosting overall protein intake or as a convenient meal replacement.
A good formula for making a fat burning meal includes:
- Selecting green fibrous vegetables such as asparagus or broccoli
- Combining the vegetables with a lean protein
- The combination of lean protein and fibrous carb then forms the foundation of a fat burning meal. Now add natural starchy carbs such as brown rice or oats.
It is important to note that a good tip is to eat the most concentrated carbohydrates early in the day when fuel is needed or after weight or gym training. This will aid fat loss whilst stimulating muscle growth.

Twenty-five percent of all adult men and fifty percent of all adult women suffer from some form of acne. These are the facts but how many adults have never had at least one acne flare up in their adult life? Adults can develop acne well into adulthood- twenties, thirties and forties and beyond that even. No acne is pleasant but somehow adult acne seems worse as acne is typically thought of as an adolescence problem. In reality adult acne, or any acne for that matter, is very hard to deal with and can lead to depression, a negative self-image and social anxiety may occur as well. The causes of adult acne are different for all people and the treatments vary as mush as the causes do. Most adult acne can be treated and managed effectively.
The causes of adult acne are unknown; some people think that adult acne has hormonal roots. The appropriate adult pimple treatment may involve balancing your hormones, which typically requires a trip to your healthcare provider or dermatologist for some testing to conclude that hormones are indeed the problem. The development of a pimple is very detailed and very intricate. While it is known that pores that are clogged can block oil from escaping, it is not known why it happens in one pore and not another. It is also not known why this does not happen in all of the pores. The many causes of adult acne and teen acne include hormone imbalance, diet, genetics, vitamin deficiency, stress, and more. The real explanation may be a complex mix of many of these factors. Since it is not know what causes pimples, it is important to focus on the proper treatment of acne. Read the rest of this entry »

I absolutely love going on weekend breaks, especially Spa breaks, and really being pampered. It’s my one extravagance and my week is so hectic with work and family that I feel I totally deserve it! But I really like to relax when I get away and I have found that Shire Hotels are the absolute best for this. Just the location and setting is so tranquil, you really feel like you’re away from the toils of the city. And you just feel rejuvenated and pampered afterwards. I normally go with my sister but I have decided that next time, I am taking my husband. If there’s anyone who needs a few Spa breaks more than anyone else, it’s him. I know he’ll kick up a fuss saying it’s a woman’s thing, but he just needs to get over his man pride, which he will, because I just know he needs the relaxation and will absolutely love it.

In today’s image conscious society, physical appearance is more important than ever to a woman’s self-esteem. Imagine the heartache caused when a woman notices her hair thinning? It is estimated that over 25 million women experience thinning hair in the United States. Many are genetically predisposed to the condition. Most wonder if there are any natural remedies to help or prevent their female hair loss.
Several vitamins have been found to be very effective in supporting female hair health. Of course, many factors may contribute to female hair loss but proper nutrition can help prevent further thinning and more loss.
Vitamin A has been found to support the healthy development of tissues and cells in the body and also supports healthy hair. This important vitamin promotes healthy hair follicles by keeping the root of the hair lubricated. Vitamin A can be found in green vegetables, particularly the leafy ones, red, orange and yellow vegetables, liver and eggs. Many good multivitamins contain the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A, so don’t take additional supplements without a physician’s supervision. Overdoses of vitamin A can be dangerous. Some of the greatest benefits for me have been my ability to tap into ‘my well of inner peace’ whenever I need to, my connection with, and to, spirit, achievement of greater clarity and balance at the end of each session, and overall wellbeing. Meditation also gave me something else.
The meditation journey for me involved profound inner change as I stepped into enlightenment. Once that door opened for me, well that was it! No turning back…ever – something which no-one ever told me.
Enlightenment, for me, is such a strange thing, and of course is many things to many people. When I stepped into this state of being, I waited for the whiz bang fireworks to begin, hear the blaring trumpets and the voice of God (which I imagined would be kind of booming and earth shattering!). I’m not sure what else I expected but what I experienced was a deep sense of stillness. The door opened, I stepped through the doorway, and how I perceived life changed forever. The clarity with which I saw things in that moment almost blinded me – yet it was so gentle. Read the rest of this entry »
